If you Google "how to launch on Product Hunt," you'll find 40 articles that all say the same three things: get a hunter, post at 12:01am PST, ask friends to upvote. Two of those three are wrong or outdated. Here's what actually works today.

Should you even launch on Product Hunt?

Product Hunt is worth it if any of these are true: (1) your buyer is a maker, developer, designer, or PM; (2) you want backlinks and press pickup more than direct revenue; (3) you want a milestone to rally your team and community around. PH is not worth it if you sell to enterprise (buyers aren't there), you're pre-product (a landing page rarely wins), or you need paying customers this week (PH traffic converts 0.3-2% to paid).

The hunter myth

The most persistent myth in the PH ecosystem: "you need a big hunter." This was true in 2019. It hasn't been true since the algorithm update in late 2023 that removed the hunter-boost weighting. Today, a post hunted by a 50k-follower hunter ranks the same as one you self-hunt — as long as the product and distribution are equal.

What a big hunter can still do: bring their audience with them. If you find a hunter whose audience genuinely overlaps yours, the value is real. But paying $500 for a hunter with no audience overlap is worse than zero — you lose the "hunted by the maker" trust signal.

Timing: day, hour, month

Day of week

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday get 3-4× the pageviews of weekends. But they also get 3-4× the competitors, so the ranking calculus is closer to a wash than you'd think. Our data:

  • Sunday: Lowest traffic, best odds of top-5 finish
  • Monday: Ramp-up day; medium traffic, medium competition
  • Tue-Thu: Peak traffic, peak competition
  • Friday: Traffic dropoff after noon; risky
  • Saturday: Second-lowest traffic; strong for niche tools

Hour of day

The 12:01am PST launch is a tradition, not a requirement. Posts go live at 12:01am regardless of when you submit — the actual submission time only matters within the ~30 minutes before your target window. Submit at 8pm PST the night before; you'll wake up to a live post.

Month

December is quiet. January "New Year" launches are crowded. Mid-February through May is the sweet spot. June-August has less traffic but also less noise.

Assets that convert

Tagline (60 chars max)

The tagline is the single most tested piece of copy on your PH page. Rules: benefit before feature, verb-led when possible, no "the best" or "AI-powered" unless it's genuinely differentiating. Bad: "AI-powered analytics platform." Good: "See which features actually make users stick."

Gallery (6 images)

Follow the "hook → aha → proof → CTA" order. The first image is scrolled past in under 2 seconds. It needs one thing: the promise. The second image is your "aha" — the specific screen that made your first user say "oh, that's cool."

Video (optional but recommended)

45 seconds max. No intro card. No talking head. Screen recording with subtle zoom-ins. Auto-plays muted on the PH page, so the first 5 seconds must be legible without audio.

The first comment

The first comment (from you, as the maker) is where visitors decide whether to upvote. It should have four elements, in this order:

  1. The hook: Why did you build this? Personal, one sentence.
  2. The what: Plain English, no jargon, one paragraph.
  3. The bullets: 3-4 concrete features or differentiators.
  4. The ask: A specific question you want feedback on. Not "let me know what you think" — specific.

FAQ

Is Product Hunt still worth it in 2026?

Yes — for maker-focused products. No — for enterprise.

How many upvotes do I need for #1?

Category-dependent. In competitive categories (AI, Developer Tools), #1 typically requires 700-1200 upvotes. In quieter ones (E-commerce, Finance), 300-500 is often enough.

Can I ask friends to upvote?

You can tell friends you launched. You cannot direct-message asking for an upvote — PH deranks posts that do this. Post a link, let people decide.
