Hunters

Everything you need to know about hunters — and whether you should bother.

Do you actually need a hunter?

Short answer: no. Self-launches routinely hit #1. The Product Hunt algorithm no longer weighs hunter accounts the way it used to. A great product with a complete kit and a warm audience will outperform a mediocre product hunted by a "big name."

Consider a hunter if: you have zero PH presence, your product is in a very specific niche, or you have a genuine relationship with someone who launches often in your category.

How to pick a good hunter

  • Look at the last 10 launches in your category. Note who hunted the top 3.
  • Check their recent hunts — are they active in the last 90 days?
  • Do they actually engage in the comments, or do they post-and-ghost?
  • Do they launch products similar to yours (positive signal, not a dealbreaker)?
  • Avoid "pro hunters" who charge money — against PH rules and rarely worth it.

How to reach out

  1. Engage with their launches genuinely for 2-4 weeks before you ask.
  2. DM on Twitter/X or their preferred channel — keep it short.
  3. Lead with why them: reference a specific launch of theirs you liked.
  4. Have your kit ready. Never ask a hunter to wait on your assets.
  5. Give at least 2 weeks notice. A week is possible for warm relationships.
  6. Be graceful if they say no. Self-hunt and move on.
